Der Sinn dieses Sprichworts ist mir nicht klar; auch habe ich es an keinem andern als dem angeführten Orte und auch dort ohne Erklärung des Mall gefunden.

Das Wort »Mall« hat in der ostfriesischen Mundart eine Anzahl verschiedener Bedeutun-
gen. Es steht a) für arg, fatal, schlimm, z.B. 't sütt mall ût mit hüm; b) für wahnsinnig, albern, närrisch, geckenhaft, z.B.: tier di nich mall = führ dich nicht albern, läppisch auf; c) hässlich, als: dat lett mall; d) überzärtlich, z.B.: he is gar mall mit her; e) vör mall = fehl, fruchtlos, unnütz, als: dat wär vör mall. (Vgl. Stürenburg, 144a.) Die obige Redensart will sagen: Er ist albern, dumm, ein Geck, ein Narr. Die ostfriesische Mundart besitzt eine Anzahl sprichwörtlicher Ausdrücke und Redensarten zur Bezeichnung eines Menschen mit beschränktem Verstande und zerrüttetem Geiste, die ich hier nach Kern (119) zusammenstelle: He is nêt gôd bedocht. He hett sîn Benüll nêt recht. He is swar van Begripp. He is wat beschränkt. He hett gên Brägen in de Kopp. Sîn Brägen sünt hum fraren. Sîn Brägen sünt hum drög. 'T is'n Dämler. He denkt nêt ratt. He is nêt recht dägn. He is dummer as dumm. He is'n Dummkopp. He is 'n Dummbart. He is 'n Dummsnut. He is so dumm as 'n Esel. He is so dumm as 'n Ochs. He is so dumm as 'n Rhinoceros.
